DESIGN 21: Social Design Network Launches ‘Culture Counts’ A UNESCO Poster Competition to Commemorate the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures.

The best hope for peace in the world - yet one of the biggest challenges - is the pursuit of better communication and understanding between different civilizations, cultures and peoples. To help UNESCO achieve this objective, DESIGN 21: Social Design Network - an online platform founded by Felissimo and UNESCO to promote design for the greater good - launched the Culture Counts competition. Designers across the globe are asked to submit poster designs that celebrate 2010 as the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures. The top 30 posters will be showcased in an exhibition at UNESCO headquarters in Paris during the second annual International Festival of Cultural Diversity in May 2010. An "Overall Winner" and two "Judge's Picks" will also be chosen to receive cash prizes.

The United Nations recently declared 2010 as the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures. With UNESCO as the leading agency for this initiative, its mission is to: promote reciprocal knowledge of cultural, ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity; build a framework for commonly shared values; strengthen quality education and build intercultural competencies; and foster dialogue for sustainable development. As a way to promote and celebrate 2010 as a step towards a new and harmonious future, UNESCO teamed up with DESIGN 21 to create the Culture Counts competition. According to DESIGN 21 Founder Haruko Smith, "Our member base has nearly doubled in the past year, which indicates that socially conscious individuals and organizations are all rallying behind the universal language of design."

Interested participants are asked to express their vision and understanding of the "Rapprochement of Cultures" by designing a poster that creatively emphasizes the importance of exchange and dialogue between cultures. Each entry should be accompanied by a description of the design and what it intends to illustrate. Judging will be based on creativity, practicality, aesthetics and overall effectiveness, but also, importantly, on how well the entries articulate universality, plurality, and a positive and diverse notion of "rapprochement."

Fifty posters will be selected for display in an online gallery linked to UNESCO's website dedicated to the celebration of the International Year 2010. Of that top selection, 30 posters will be printed for a special exhibition at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris during the International Festival of Cultural Diversity in May 2010. UNESCO will also select an "Overall Winner" to receive $2,000 plus a trip to Paris to attend the exhibition. Another $500 will be awarded to each of two "Judge's Picks" as decided on by DESIGN 21 Advisory Board members. Deadline for entries is March 9, 2010.
