Villeroy & Boch donates plates and sanitary products to build up schools

The shattering pictures of the people struck by the devastating earthquake in Haiti have precipitated a wave of global solidarity. Above all, it is the children's suffering and the hopelessness of their situation which motivate people to try to relieve this misery with a donation. Yesterday evening ZDF, a public-service German television channel, and the German charity and aid campaign "Ein Herz für Kinder" staged a fundraising gala in an effort both to concentrate and motivate aid.

Broadcast live from Berlin, the event was presented by the famous TV presenters Thomas Gottschalk and Steffen Seibert and included a link up with German Federal Chancellor, Angela Merkel. Celebrities taking part on the telephone panel included the German fashion designer Wolfgang Joop, the professional boxer Vitali Klitschko and many others, who accepted donations from all sectors of the population. Innumerable donations, both large and small, from enterprises and private individuals, generated the incredible sum of around € 18 million.

A phone call from the Villeroy & Boch company announced a donation in kind: 1,000 items of sanitary ware, toilets and washbasins will be provided and the Tableware Division will supply 2,500 soup plates from a contemporary, internationally popular series. With this donation, worth € 100,000, Villeroy & Boch wishes to contribute towards rebuilding the country, in particular, towards setting up schools and Kindergartens – both important signs of hope and a major requirement for the children's future.

"It will be an enormous strain to rebuild this totally destroyed country," said Frank Göring, Management Board Chairman. "By donating our products, we want to help restore buildings which are important for the children and their future."
