New Material Award-How materials open new worlds

Soutěže

The New Material Award calls artists and designers to present designs that answer today's questions and tomorrow's challenges. New materials or innovative use of materials serve as guidelines.

The prize has two distinctions: the New Material Award with a cash prize of €15,000 for a finished product, and the New Material Fellow, for a detailed idea linked to a research question. Entries can be sent in starting today until 27 June 2014.

The New Material Award is the follow-up of the DOEN | Material award, which was created by the DOEN Foundation and the Materiaal fonds in 2009. Starting in 2014, the award is a collaboration between the DOEN Foundation, the Materiaalfonds and Het Nieuwe Instituut.

The focus of the New Material Award is on the development of new materials and their application. The award focuses on the interface between science, design, art and technology, and aims to challenge participants to search for solutions for the future beyond the boundaries of their own field. The New Material Award is globally unique. Not the business model but the artistic and aesthetic aspects prevail in assessing the entries. Sustainability and innovation are of paramount importance. The New Material Award wants to inspire designers to create designs that contribute to a better and more durable world.

Het Nieuwe Instituut supports the winner of the New Material Fellow for a period of up to six months to further develop his or her idea and research a new material or innovative application of a new material.

A good example of follow-up research is the design of the Current Table by Marjan van Aubel, winner of the 2012 DOEN | Material Award. Thanks to the support she received as part of the award, Van Aubel was able to develop her latest project, a table that generates energy, into an end product, in partnership with technology company Solaronix.

A committee of experts nominates sixteen to eighteen designs from all entries. The nominated designs will be on display at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam from 20 November 2014 through 5 January 2015. During the opening of the exhibition, the jury will announce the two winners.

The DOEN Foundation, the Materiaalfonds and Het Nieuwe Instituut feel that artists and designers have an important role to play in initiating new developments in society and responding to current and urgent issues.
The New Material Award is open to artists, designers, fashion designers and architects who are active in Netherlands.
