Polish designer Barbara Pilarska, 1st Prize in the 11th Francisko Mantecón International Advertising Poster Competition

Polish designer Barbara Pilarska has won the 1st Prize in the Francisco Mantecón International Advertising Poster Competition, organized by Terras Gauda Wineries. The award is accompanied by €10,000 in prize money and the poster, a pattern of lines that stands out for its simplicity, subtlety, technical skill and flawless resolution, will be the image of the winery for the coming year.

The Vigo Port Authority 1st Honorable Mention went to Giacomo Boffo (Italy), the 2nd Honorable Mention to Xavier Rosales (Barcelona) and the Special Mention to Andrea Bertolo (Italy). Each of these awards was accompanied by €2,000 in prize money.

Of the 1,890 posters from 65 countries that were entered in the competition, 42 works from the Czech Republic, Poland, Italy, France, Slovenia, China, Costa Rica, Argentina and Spain were selected as finalists by the panel of judges, which included designer Roberto Turégano as a professional guest member.

The panel of judges were unanimous in stressing the quality of the posters, as well as their cultural and artistic diversity. From Europe, works by Italian artists were especially plentiful, with 345 posters submitted. Germany, Austria, France, Finland, Poland and Russia are other countries from this continent that were well-represented. The United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Costa Rica were the countries with the most entries from North and South America.

Japan, with 24 posters, is the most prolific representative of Asian design in the competition. From this continent, works were received from India, Iran, Malaysia and Singapore. From Oceania, posters were sent in from Australia and New Zealand, while Africa was represented by South Africa.

Professors from universities in Finland, the United States and the United Kingdom took part in the competition, making poster design for the Francisco Mantecón competition part of their students academic training. This edition alone had participation from 5 different universities in the USA: San Francisco State University, California State University, Michigan University, Southern Illinois University and School of Arts and Design of Illinois. Entries were also received from SCAD - The University for Creative Careers (Hong Kong) in China, and Karelia University of Applied Sciences in Finland, among others.

The Francisco Mantecón Competition received support from reputable associations of designers and prestigious cultural institutions and museums of Contemporary Art, such as the Costa Rican Museum of Art and Contemporary Design. Professional organizations included: Grafia (Finland), Iceland Design Centre (Iceland), Stowarzyszenie Twórców Grafiki Uzytkowej STGU (Poland), Plakat MSH (Russia), ALADI Asociación Latinoamericana de Diseño, Desain Grafis (Indonesia) and the Design Institute of Australia.

The attention received from the international media grows with each passing edition. The general and specialized media around the world reported on different aspects of the competition, which was organized by Terras Gauda in collaboration with the Vigo Port Authority and with the support of the Department of Culture, Education and University Affairs through the General Secretariat of Culture.
